Is Your Home Ready for the Spring Thaw?

It is true spring is on the horizon and we will be able to emerge from our winter hideaways and enjoy new smells, above freezing temperatures and the tasks of getting your home ready for the warmer months. Spring officially starts on March 20th, which are only a few weeks away. To make things easier for you we have compiled a simple checklist to ensure that your home is in top-notch shape for the changing season.

Your outdoor maintenance checklist

Roof

Since your roof took a beating this last winter with the amount of snow that we had and the use of a snow rake on it, for most of us was necessary, you will want to look for missing, cracked or broken shingles. If you notice any of your shingles have buckled or curled it is time to consider a roof replacement. Snow, ice and harsh cold can cause the granules on your shingles to be damaged. Check around any chimneys, vents or skylights for loose flashing or deteriorated rubber seals that can cause leaking.

Gutters

During the winter water can freeze within your gutters, which expands and can cause damage. Inspect your downspouts for any debris blocking the flow of water and make sure they are pointing away from the foundation of your home.

Concrete Slabs

Inspect your concrete slab of your home’s foundation for cracks or movement. All exterior slabs, except pool decks, should drain away from your home. If you notice any changes fill cracks with concrete filler or silicone caulk.  Any low areas next to your foundation fill with compacted soil to prevent flooding and insect breeding grounds.

Hoses & Outdoor Faucets

Check your hoses and faucets outside for freeze damage. Turn the water on and place your thumb over the opening. If you can stop the flow of water, it may be likely that the pipe inside your home could be damaged and need replacement.

Heating & Cooling Unit

Have a qualified heating & cooling specialist out to clean your air conditioning unit by cleaning the coils and change the filter so you are ready for peak season.

Windows & Doors

Check the caulking around all doors and windows. Put up your screens and inspect for any damage. Give your windows a good washing.
