Spring Deck Installation Tips

Our team answers homeowner questions every weekend on WCCO 830 AM from 9:00 am-10:00 am.  Have your most pressing home improvement questions answered by calling 651-989-9226 or texting 81807.  Here’s must-know information from our in-house deck specialist, Luke Panek, shared on 3.9.19.

In terms of decks, most homeowners are interested in composite deck designs over wooden ones.  A low-maintenance material that wins high marks with homeowners is Zuri® Premium Decking by Royal.  Designed to imitate the aesthetics of exotic wood, the product’s topcoat is manufactured to protect against efflorescence.

Winter provides an optimum time of the year to begin working with deck and patio contactors to discuss material and design.  Often, by the time spring has sprung, Twin Cities deck builders have filled their schedule for the entire season.

Here’s What You Need to Know About Zuri® Deck Installation:

When planning a deck, homeowners often ask if there’s a way to reuse components from a previous deck in order to lower costs.  While at times, boards can be reused, the joists should not be because their lifespan is often less than 30 years.  In addition, this part of the deck is often the cheapest.  It’s wise to remove the old ledger board because doing so allows for water damage inspection and the installation of a new drip cap.

With the spring thaw comes warmer temperatures.  With winters as extreme as this one has been, the spring thaw can bring about some concerning home issues.  Homes with ice dams are susceptible to  attic insulation and drywall damage once temperatures rise enough for the dam to thaw.  Water can also infiltrate house windows between the casing and extension jamb.  This happens when water penetrates the plywood and ice & water shield on the roof and then reaches a home’s attic then drips down along the home’s walls.  It is imperative that the roof has a drainage plane so that water sitting between the ice dam and the shingles has the ability to exit the roof so that interior water damage does not occur.

"Very pleased with Lindus' replacement of my rotting deck. It wasn't an easy project, but the work team was unfailingly professional and they were perfectionists about their work. I'm thrilled with my new composite deck, which likely will outlast me! It would hold a tank, and is a handsome addition to my backyard."

"We had Luke from Lindus come out to give us an estimate to demo our existing wood deck and replace it with a low-maintenance, composite deck. We were very impressed with his proposal and ordered one.  The deck turned out fantastic. We specified treated lumber framing and Azek® for the decking and trim. Color coordinated steel railings and integrated stair and post lighting complement the project. The crew couldn't have been better.  We are totally satisfied with the deck and with Lindus."
