Minnesota Roofing Trends Discussed!

14 April 2018

Our team answers homeowner questions every weekend on WCCO 830 AM from 9:00 am-10:00 am.  Have your most pressing home improvement questions answered by calling 651-989-9226 or texting 81807.  Here’s the must-know information our COO, Andy Lindus, shared on 4.14.18.

Cheri in Maplewood was the show’s first caller.  Her quandary was that her story and a half stucco home continuously has ice dams forming on it and while she’d had another contractor install insulation, it hadn’t fully corrected the issue.  We advised that while insulation is a good first step towards the prevention of ice dams, other measures must be taken.  Most notably, attic air sealing should be completed in order to eliminate the release of warm air, which leads to ice dam formation.

One of the best ways to determine if your home is leaking air is through a home performance test.  Summer is the optimum time to complete a blower door test because there is of a variance between the indoor and outdoor temperatures.  However, infrared imaging in the winter months can provide an insulation contractor with the information they need to assist you in creating a more energy efficient home.

Here’s a Behind the Scenes Look at How a Blower Door Test is Completed:

Two of the biggest pieces of criteria we use to determine which manufacturers to partner with are the warranties they offer and their commitment to innovation.  When it comes to asphalt roofs, we’ve found a true partner in GAF Roofing.  We’re proud to announce that we’re in a select group of residential roofing companies in the Twin Cities that’s able to offer a brand-new warranty on Timberline® Ultra HD™ shingles that cannot be found on other shingles in the marketplace.  The new warranty increases algae coverage from 10 years to 25.  This warranty offers significant peace of mind, particularly for homeowners with mature oak trees surrounding their property.  In scenarios such as these, it’s only a matter of time before mold or algae start attacking a roof.  Until this point zinc strips installed at the roof’s peak were the best solution, because shingle manufacturers were prevented from creating a shingle with zinc in them.  However, through rigorous testing over the course of several years, the scientists at GAF were able to create a chemical make-up that is a part of the shingle that wards off algae.
