Kitchen Window Replacement Style Guide

19 November 2020

Often referred to as the “heart of the home”, your kitchen provides a place for family and friends to gather and enjoy meals and fellowship.  There is no doubt that the kitchen is one of the most frequented rooms in the home.  Windows play an integral role in kitchen design because they allow for ventilation and expanded natural light.  Here’s our guide to the most coveted kitchen window styles.

Awning Kitchen Windows: An awning window has hinges at the top and they open upwards and outwards.  They are excellent for ventilation because they can be opened, regardless if it is raining.  This is because the underside of the pane is configured away from the home.  Awning windows also win high marks for the unobstructed view they provide.

Bay Kitchen Windows: Bay windows are a series of three windows that are connected to create a larger window.  As a rule, the larger window in the middle does not open and close, but the smaller ones do.  Bay windows are an optimum choice for a kitchen because the amount of natural light they amplify can create the illusion of a larger space.  Homeowners that have bay kitchen windows installed also appreciate that they offer a spot for items such as houseplants, cookbooks, and tchotchkes to be placed.  In addition, bay windows can be configured to include a window seat.

Bow Kitchen Windows: While similar in design to bay windows, bow windows set themselves apart by having a curved, rather than boxy presentation.  Bow windows also set themselves apart by having panes that extend outward, creating a more circular impression.  Popular spots to install bow windows in the kitchen include in front of the kitchen sink or near a breakfast nook.

Casement Kitchen Windows: This window style has hinges on one side and is opened with the use of a crank.  Many times, they are installed in pairs over the kitchen sink, allowing for optimum ventilation and natural light exposure.  They are preferable to double-hung kitchen windows in configurations where the user must reach-out over a sink or cabinet in order to operate.Casement Window

Garden Kitchen Windows: A garden window can be recognized by its outward projection with panes on the left, right, center, and top.  The installation of a garden window allows for a moderate amount of natural light to enter a kitchen.  The ideal spot for garden window installation is above the kitchen sink, as this will allow for optimum ventilation.  Constructed with a built-in shelf, garden windows are an excellent spot for houseplants and potted herbs to rest.
