The New Year gives us a reason to focus on immediate goal but also reminds us that our time here is limited and that living it to the fullest is a must. Many of us have bucket lists that include places we want to see or new activities we want to try. In our line of work, it’s common to meet with homeowners with a bucket list item that includes the creation of space tailored to their custom tastes. 2017 became the year that we helped our clients, Scott & Brenda, make their dream of a northern Wisconsin cabin a reality.
Over two decades prior, the couple had entrusted us with the construction of their Baldwin, WI home. To this day, it continues to be a place where they cheer regularly cheer for their favorite Wisconsin spots teams, host holidays, and spend time with their two adult children. When summer arrives, one of their favorite pastimes has been boating and camping in Luck, WI. Even before they’d been married, they’d enjoyed spending time near Bone Lake and promised themselves one day they’d build a place of their own there.
With the goal of spending time around a campfire or on the lake, Scott & Brenda asked for our recommendations for maintenance-free materials that would stand the test of time. Here’s the scoop on the exterior materials used on the couple’s “Garouse” (a building that acts as both a cabin & garage):
Siding: When it comes to the look of the wood siding without the maintenance, it’s hard to find a better product than LP® SmartSide®. It’s got a leg up on lumber because it’s it is proven effective against wood decay and rot. LP® siding installation is much easier than fiber cement application because it comes in longer lengths, weighs less, and does not require the use of special tools. For the underlayment, we utilized Insultex™ House Wrap which is the thinnest, lightest and warmest underlayment available within the marketplace today.
Windows & Doors: When you’ve got a picturesque wooded view, having windows that showcase it, is a must. This is part of the reason SeasonGuard windows were a perfect match. Every SeasonGuard window is designed to allow the maximum amount of light in and to fit any opening. Equally as important is the fact that SeasonGuard windows and doors utilize Latitude Glass. This type of glass is engineered to provide maximum thermal efficiency. This is of utmost importance in a climate that has such substantial temperature swings. For the summer months, a 9 x 18 full garage door screen was added to bring the outdoors in, minus the mosquitoes.
Decking: During the discussion of composite deck designs, it was decides that a walk-out deck off the master suite, would add to the building’s charm and increase its livable space. TimberTech® Decking provides the look of wood, but never needs to be stained. This material offers our clients complete peace of mind because it is accompanied with an industry leading 30 year fade and stain warranty. The rustic look was completed with the use of a maintenance-free Fortress™ Railing system.
Roofing: When it comes to asphalt roofs, warranties are a major reason Lindus Construction recommends GAF Roofing. First and foremost, the company offers a 50-year, non-prorated warranty on labor and materials. GAF Roofing has also received the Good Housekeeping Seal. If any product with the Good Housekeeping Seal fails within two years of the purchase date and proper documentation is provided, the Good Housekeeping Institute will pay for a full refund or supply a replacement. What’s even more impressive is that GAF shingles are the only shingles in the roofing industry to have earned this esteemed honor, which was awarded 20 years ago.
Gutters: In addition to the shared lake access, one of the best features of the lot that Scott & Brenda selected was the abundance of mature trees. Rather than fight a losing battle of continuous cleaning the building’s gutters, they opted to have us install LeafGuard® Brand Gutters. Installed in white, they provide the look of crown molding.
