The Three Top Areas in Your Home That Benefit from Insulation

If your home is drafty and uncomfortable one of the top solutions is the addition of more insulation and ventilation.  However, where the insulation is installed can have a major impact on its overall effect.  Here are the top three areas where insulation can be applied to create a more energy efficient space.

1. Walls

If you place your hands on the interior walls of your home and they feel dry and warm, chances are that your insulation is enough in those areas.  However, if walls feel cold and damp, additional insulation is likely needed.  If a home has adequate levels of insulation, exterior walls should feel cooler than interior ones because the insulation is working to contain warm air within the home.

Proper levels of wall insulation prevent drafts and rampant temperature swings between the rooms within your home.  Wall insulation can also work to lower the amount of sound transfer throughout your home.

2. Attic

Attic insulation is most often talked about, and with good reason.  Inadequate roof insulation and ventilation will cause the heat you paid for to escape your home and will eventually cause ice dams.  In addition, the proper levels of insulation lower your energy bills and place a lower strain on your furnace because it is not running more than necessary.

Not sure if you need more insulation?  If you visit your attic and your home’s current insulation is below or level with the floor joists, more is almost always needed.  Contact a  reputable insulation contractor that can utilize tools such as smoke sticks, infrared imaging, and blower doors to determine where energy is leaking from your home and why.

In our climate, it is recommended that attic insulation be a minimum of R-50.   Attic air sealing around soffits and the attic access hatch should also be completed in order to create the most energy efficient space possible.

3. Crawl Space

If your home’s floors feel cold all winter or frozen pipes are a continuous concern, an under insulated crawl space is often to blame.  By having a professional install spray foam in the crawl space and on the rim joist, both scenarios can be avoided.  Upgrading to a conditioned crawl space will allow your duct work to remain warmer in the winter months and cooler in the summer.  This allows for enhanced distribution of hot and cold air throughout your home at the proper times of the year.

Roof Insulation and Ventilation Reviews:

"I did two big projects in 2023 with Lindus. First was removing and replacing attic insulation plus creating proper ventilation. Second was replacing roof and adding LeafGuard®. Did everything go perfectly? No but that is where a company shows its merits. All issues were resolved! I even received a check for unused supplies. I highly recommend Lindus. They are not the cheapest. You get what you pay for."

"Lindus Construction did a great job of removing old insulation in our attic and then sprayed foam insulation to seal the air leaks in both our attic and basement. They then installed new insulation to meet current building codes and corrected venting issues. Randall kept me updated me updated at each step of project which I appreciated. The Lindus team was very courteous and did great job of keeping our house clean during this time."

"Randall Bowman and an attic insulation crew attended to my Somerset, WI condo in Oct. 2023.  They were ahead of schedule, very conscientious about not causing any damage or mess in the house. Very conscientious about not blocking traffic for my condo development neighbors. And, they were very efficient-- finishing earlier than they estimated. I would highly recommend Lindus Construction and the two insulation company they contract with."

"Jake was very helpful and responsive in getting through this catastrophic event when a huge chunk of ice crashed through our family room ceiling. He was helpful in discussions with insurance company, especially as when they sent out an evaluator he spent less then 20 minutes on the job, then disappeared."
